Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from its conception, through design and manufacture, to service and disposal / retirement. PLM is one of the four cornerstones of a corporation's information technology structure. All companies need to manage communications and information with their customers (CRM-Customer Relationship Management) and their suppliers (SCM-Supply Chain Management) and the resources within the enterprise (ERP-Enterprise Resource Planning). In addition, manufacturing engineering companies must also develop, describe, manage and communicate information about their products (PLM). PLM is the title commonly applied to a set of application software that enables the New Product Development (NPD) process. PLM has been of tremendous significance to Product-based companies because companies have been able to achieve:

  • Reduced time to develop new-products
  • Improved product quality and lesser faults
  • Reduced prototyping costs
  • Savings through the re-use of earlier knowledge captured during previous products
  • A framework for product optimization
  • Reduced waste and optimize material handling costs
  • Savings through the complete integration of engineering workflows

PLM: Opportunity for Indian Educators

Indian economy is expected to continue to grow 8-9% annually till 2015. Domestic and foreign companies are expanding their presence in India to be a part of the growing domestic market as well as to serve the international market by leveraging India's low cost and better quality labor pool. This explosive growth, both in services and manufacturing sector, is creating a severe labor shortage forcing firms to rely on the two million fresh graduates, coming out of colleges annually, to satisfy its labor needs. Recent research estimates that around 1.6M (80% of the annual graduate output) of these graduates, majority coming from the 2nd and 3rd tier cities, have no or minimal employable skills, making it mandatory for firms to spend enormous amount of time and money to train the fresh hires to build employable skills. Companies are spending, at a minimum Rs. 3.00 Lakhs to Rs. 8.00 Lakhs and 4-6 months on training each new hire resulting in 10% total labor cost increase. Researches confirm that most companies treat hiring and training fresh graduates as an important but a non-core activity in its value chain and want to outsource this activity to reduce cost and time spent but are not able to do so due to lack of high quality, low cost and scalable training service providers.  Needless to add, engineering services sector in India is expanding tremendously with the growth of domestic and multi-national auto makers, like Tata Motors and Ford, and with the growth of automotive suppliers new companies, new models and new concepts are making inroads to India. Automobile sector is emerging out to be one of the strongest in India. Companies like Tata Motors, Ford, Honda, Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Maruti, Ashok Leyland and their hundreds of component suppliers use Dassault Systemes software solutions.                              PLM : As Enabler In The World of Jobs & Career  Students who will be trained in PLM competency centre will be eligible to attain jobs in the following industries:

  1. Automobile Industry: Passenger Car companies (Tata Motors, Honda, Toyota, Maruti etc.); Commercial Vehicle Companies (Ashok Leyland, Volvo, Tata Motors); Two-wheeler companies (Hero Honda, TVS group). Hundreds of suppliers to these companies also need trained engineers as employees.
  2. Aerospace Industry: Besides ISRO and DRDO there are a lot of private companies who are working in aerospace sector.
  3. Shipbuilding Industry: Major shipyards in India and DRDO labs use Dassault Systemes software to create passenger ships, military warships and even submarines.
  4. Hi-Tech Electronic Goods Industry: Electronic goods manufacturers, Computer makers, semiconductor companies, mobile phone manufacturers.
  5. Consumer Goods Industry: Personal goods manufacturers, Apparel and jewelry makers and sports & leisure goods makers.
  6. Power & Energy sector: Chemical, Petroleum and Energy companies including Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India.
  7. Industrial Equipment: Machinery manufactures, Fabrication companies, Component manufacturers.
  8. Consumer Packaged goods: Food & Beverage companies, Cosmetic and Healthcare companies, Household product companies.
